Every August, the Perseids meteor shower is visible from the constellation Perseus. Last night the meteor shower peaked – thus giving us ample opportunity to watch shooting stars, something I dearly love.

Around Midnight, I gathered up lots of blankets, made two cups of hot cocoa with cognac and together Hubby and I went out into our the dark garden.

Lying under the stars, I quickly saw the first shooting star and – as I have done since I was a little kid – made a wish.

We were quiet, sipping our hot cocoa and humbly watching the multitude of stars, overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all.  There we were, two tiny specs of organic matter in the midst of the galaxies, lying on the surface of a tiny blue planet, whirling through space.

Faced with the universe, my mind wandered. Imagine, how people thousands of years ago looked at the same stars and constellations. The distances to the farthest stars is so far that they cannot be reached in our life time – and yet their light travels for eons and reaches us. What is the meaning of all this? Is there a God? Is anybody out there? Who am I? What is my purpose? What…

These thoughts were soon interrupted by Prince Charming, who proclaimed: “Well, this was nice but I really gotta take a crap.”

Yeah. He keeps me grounded.

Is anybody out there? Yeah I’ll tell you what’s out there in your country at this time of the year: spiders. Ugh!
